Black Sea Hotel was up in Hudson, NY, where we performed at the Basilica Hudson, headlining (with opening musicians, Patrick Higgins + Charlie Looker) for Basilica's closing party for BUMP: An Interactive Whale Exhibit by Frank & Dan Dendanto . Stunning acoustics and visuals. We sang under suspended whale bones. Enjoy a sample of the evening.

Black Sea Hotel has returned from a gorgeous New Mexico retreat. Sarah and Shelley traveled back to New York this past week from Willa’s hometown, where they’d joined her for a week of intensely focused Black Sea Hotel musical rehearsals, farming, green smoothie-drinking, production meetings, photo-shoots, and video-shoots. The trip culminated in a radio interview / live performance on KUNM's Free Form with Harry Norton, an acoustically gorgeous concert at GiG Performance Space in Santa Fe, and a BSH vocal workshop. We treated ourselves to a heavenly evening under the stars in hot and cold baths at the one-and-only 10,000 Waves.

We collected some stunning new media (thanks to all of our resident photographers + videographers: Jim Roberts, Ryan Roberts, and Bruce Dunlap.) We workshopped all our songs with tremendous love, focus, and precision, and feel very enlivened by this experience. We are grateful to Willa’s father, Jim, for hosting us for the week on his beautiful rustic farm in Chimayo, NM.

*(Note from Sarah) Upcoming Black Sea Hotel Vocal Workshop

For those of you interested in learning Balkan a Cappella singing, Black Sea Hotel would love to share techniques and songs with you. We will be hosting this vocal workshop this coming weekend (Sunday, Sept 7th at 1PM.). The workshop will examine vocal placement, stylistic elements and ornamentation, strategies for blend, and rhythmic and harmonic structures. We will teach songs that exemplify all of these elements. The workshop is open to all levels; previous experience and sight-reading are not required. RSVP (Willa Roberts at  "> ) to confirm your spot and receive directions to location.

Black Sea Hotel, in new and unusual formjourneyed through the mid-Atlantic last month… We taught and laughed a lot, but mainly (as per usual), we sang our hearts out. As many of you know, Willa and I had our third member leave the group last year, so we decided to go on this tour in new and unusual form. Guess what!? This new form included a BOY in the mix (but don't worry, he sings in a girl's register most of the time, unless he's singing low with me in my boy register). Our guest singers on this tour, pictured here with Willa and I, are Shelley Thomas and Carl Linich.

My father's "Journey in Silence" tour continues… This Friday in NYC, Haskell Small will perform his composition, Rothko Room, as originally commissioned by The Phillips Collection in Washington DC (his - and my - hometown). This work for solo piano was inspired by a room of red Rothko paintings at the gallery.

Multiple Dads - "Dad, Not Dad": I've been collecting people in the world who look like my father. Here are a collection of five of them. One is my Dad. The other four are not. Can you do the guesswork?:

At b in Chelsea, I worked on Tori Wraanes’s “Yes NIX” performance, as part of Performa13. I participated as one of the singers on bicycles circling round and round in song crescendoing dissonant chords, surrounding the central action. Tori is lovely and joyful all around. Stay tuned to the Performa site for updates.

FLICfest at the Irondale Center. This Saturdaymy vocal trio, Hydra, will be singing and dancing while immersed inside Vanessa’s Walter’s dance piece, entitled Ripening” , produced by The FLICfest. Walter’s performance explores the process of aging, and is both comical and sassy, as well as introspective and dark.

Black Sea Hotel will perform a Live Radio Set TONIGHT (Monday Nov 4th) on WFMU's Airborne event with Dan Bodah between 9pm and 12midnight. Willa and Sarah will be interviewed and will sing live excerpts from their new album, The Forest is Shaking and Swaying, with three guest special singers, Rima Fand, Yula Beeri, and Carl Linich.

"Black Sea Hotel are the Ramones of Balkan a capella song." They infuse this already-wild traditional music with their own gutsy sound that is by turns dissonant and driving, lyrical and ethereal.  -- Dan Bodah (WMFU)
