This video's entrancing. Why? What's my favorite part? I think it's the transition from verse to chorus. Hits me.

Last week, I sang with fire on my head with the rest of the newly formed Fire Choir, in Times Square. Thank you to Anita Durst for making this possible for us. It was incredible to experience. And very very hot. We performed a gorgeous arrangement of Mad World, by Rima Fand, of Hydra. I want to do more of these. I think Flambeaux, the orchestrator of all things FIRE, will be booking more gigs for us. I'm looking forward to it for sure.

Here is a great review of BSH's performance last night by music blog Lucid Culture, entitled Otherworldly Cutting-Edge Balkan Beauty from Black Sea Hotel (written by Delarue):

Yesterday evening’s program at the Bang on a Can Marathon was enticing, but it couldn’t have been any more cutting-edge than Brooklyn Balkan a-cappella trio Black Sea Hotel’s performance at a reverb-rich synagogue in Ditmas Park. Willa Roberts, Corinna Snyder and Sarah Small sometimes take large scale arrangements of Bulgarian folk music and strip them down to just three voices; other times they do their own inventive arrangements of traditional melodies...

For those of you who don’t know about the new baby creature born, meet HYDRA, new vocal trio I sing (and speak) with, grown out of collaborations in the last Tableau performance, with musical director and composer, Rima Fand, and vocalist, Yula Beeri.
Hydra sometimes wears a dress. Hydra does some ‘dancing’. Hydra sings in darkthick-textured harmony. Hydra currently speaks EnglishAlbanian and Gibberish. Hydra’s an infant. We are learning new linguistic and locomotive tricks every day. We have no pictures yet to prove it, so we hope you can come out and take some for us! … We will love you very much for this.

I don't understand this context. She's singing and crying and then her mother appears, but she thought she was missing forever (?) And the combination of audience reaction shots. I just can't figure out my reaction to this. I find myself crying, but also laughing, and uncomfortable. The audience shots seems strangely staged or something. I don't understand. I need to get a translation, I think.

Last night, Hydra performed with Feloche and others as party of Sxip Shirey's Birthday and Joe's Pub. Feloche was unique as can be and wonderfully full of energy. Loved his set.
Check out his wild music video:
